Acne scar chemical peeling is one of six potential types of treatments for people who have scarring after their acne has already cleared. There are a few important things to note about acne scar chemical peeling and the first is that it is not a recommended method for those with very deep or serious scarring. It is meant for those with simple and light scarring. It generally costs on average between $300 and $750. The price range is due to the fact that for the process to be effective, multiple applications might be necessary.

The process involves acid being applied to the skin in order for the top layer to be removed by peeling. The theory is that the next skin layer underneath will not be scarred and will therefore serve as a smoother replacement.

Those that use this method should be advised that it is the least likely of the possible acne scar treatments to work, and that redness and swelling should be expected as the skin flakes due to the acid. It may take up to a few weeks for the redness and swelling to vanish and for your face to return to normal.

There are a wide range of acne scar chemical peeling options available. Alpha or beta hydroxy acids are meant for mild scars while medium scars usually require tricholeracetic acid. While the process is not highly recommended for deeper scars, attempts can be made using a carbolic acid such as Phenol.

It should be noted that while the process can be used to remove acne itself in cases where the acne is light, it is highly recommended that acne be treated previous to acne scar chemical peeling treatments, as removing white heads or black heads with acid is not always effective.

Consulting a dermatologist or aesthetician is advisable, though more expensive than attempting to apply the acid yourself.
